As a first release from Sabamiso Reissue Project, I produced and remixed “Freaky” which was originally released in 2008. My Name is Atsushi Degawa, I first came up with this re-issue idea, with cooperation from DJ .Kota / Melting Pot.
When we were working on the original project in 2008, it was the time of pinnacle of Electro music, as a genre at club / dance music industry. Now, electro is separate from genre, and it becomes an concept which has strong power of influence to various club music… even for music in major industry also. At this situation, I created a remix track of “Freaky” which includes many elements of latest dance music.
Ravey lead synth reminds you “Dominator” by Human Resource, beat which was inspired from Dutch house music, guitar synths from rockin’ electro elements, and piano riff was inspired by Swedish house. I never insist this remix track as “a track of post-electro era”, it’s just a piece of my interpretation as a DJ. Please enjoy this project with other versions that we distribute, and I hope you’ll be including the tracks to your DJ-play set-lists.

** Freaky should always be ‘edgy’ - Reissue of Sabamiso “FREAKY” by Kota Suzuki
As a series of 2kai Reissues, today we release “FREAKY” by Sabamiso again.
"Freaky should always be performed and arranged edgy.." this is my personal opinion as one of a contributor for this track. When I was hired by Sabamiso as a director for their concert project "HAKKAISAN!!" in late 2008, they introduced me a mp3 of "We Are Rockstars" by Does It Offend You Yeah. Of course, I did know the track then through Kitsune Maison compilation series, but I haven’t tried that kind of ravey n’ rock music. That wasn’t particularly new, but it sounded fresh and included their statement ‘what’s gonna coming next?’ I could understand when Sabamiso members told me that they wanna create edgy dance music like that tune. We decided creating our interpretation and reply to "We Are Rockstars" …
"Freaky should always be performed and arranged edgy.." this is also a rule. Back in late 2008, remembering several sessions for this track, we did try some strange experiments. Such as using tiny little sampling fragments at break part, or using noises from CDJ and we did even use it as a sound of synth-sampler. Strong compression for every audio track was also challenging for youth deejay members at Sabamiso. Because they didn’t have enough knowledge creating riffs n’ basses, I did create enormous loops of basslines and guitar-riffs. And they picked some for this track. (So, I mean, there’re so much declined riffs at our shelf!) We got together at their booth, and did a final production for this track. That’s how we created it. Later that was released as "HAKKAISAN!!"… All sabamiso members and me were at the stage. (I joined as support bassist.) It was truly, a live performance. These three versions show you the phrase, ‘edgy’… First of all, the remastered version is engineered by me, under the direction by Atsushi Degawa. The version sounds much better than the original, at least we guess so. Comparing with systems we had in 2008, we got some wonderful plug-ins and hardwares, that makes the original remastered version more fresh and solid. Even the arrangement and all audio tracks are still at 2008, final interpretation=mastering is 2011. We tried keeping the original master version, because it should be at 2008. As I said, it was exactly fresh and edgy in 2008. And original should be remained.
Completely new and fresh interpretation in 2011 was produced by Atsushi Degawa, a main director and originator of this re-issue project. It clearly shows the phrase ‘edgy’… He did renovate the track by 2011 ways; ravey atmosphere, beats that remind us Dutch ghetto music, strong n’ heavy dynamics and compressions. It’s apparently, 2011 sound. Atsushi Degawa makes his re-debut by this remix track project. This is not only the re-starting point of the song, but also for him. He has spent over a month to create a final 2ch master for this, never ask anybody helping it, just did it by himself. I can easily imagine that it was a very tough task for him… ‘cause he had to master how to organize and mix sounds into 2ch stereo. He’s brave enough to achieve the best result - the final master turned out very fine, as you hear. It’s so ‘stupid / idiot’ ‘edgy’ ‘loud’ ‘(sound of) furious man’ etc… This is how the song is expressed in 2011.
At last, a bonus is attached. Strange interpretation in 2011 from me, as Pianist Dot Kota. It’s an acoustic interpretation, completely. I never used synths n’ midi, creating this version. Just piano, and a few sound from original track. This is a kind of joke recording. Just for fun. But, I did try my best, not betraying the phrase “Freaky should always be performed and arranged edgy…” I’m not good at playing the piano, as you hear. And the song is too simple, just three chords are used. I reconsidered the relationship of chords and bassline at this time, for this version. My piano was influenced by jazzy style, because my piano teacher was a professional jazz pianist for a gorgeous piano club in Ginza. It was inevitable ignoring the thing.
